Renewing your driving license online

You can renew your Irish driving license through the NDLS online portal using your MyGovID credentials. This procedure covers the standard NDLS online renewal process for anyone who already holds an Irish driving license.

Use this topic if you or someone you support wants to:
  • Renew an Irish driving licence online using the NDLS website.
  • Have a clear checklist of what you need before you start, such as MyGovID and licence details
  • Sign in using MyGovID, and move through the renewal steps without missing anything.
  • Know when NDLS might ask for extra medical or eyesight reports and what to do next
  • Complete the medical questionnaire, and upload documents if NDLS asks for them.

Before you begin

Make sure you have:

  • A verified MyGovID account
  • Your most recent driving license number
  • Any required medical or eyesight report (scanned and ready to upload)
  • Proof of address and residency (if prompted)

Before you begin

Depending on your answers, NDLS may ask you to upload additional documents.

Steps

1. Go to the National Driving License Service (NDLS) website
  • Open the NDLS website
  • Select Apply online.
  • You are redirected to the MyGovID sign-in page.
2. Sign in with your MyGovID email and password
  • Enter the 6-digit verification code sent to your phone. You are redirected to the MyGovID sign-in page.

Tip

  • If you don’t receive the code, select Resend code.
  • If you do not have a MyGovID account, follow the link to create one and return to NDLS.
3. Review your personal details

Caution

If the address shown for MyGovID and NDLS differ, update them before submitting.

4. Select **Renew my driving license** and confirm your vehicle categories
  • NDLS may remind you that eyesight or medical reports could be required.

5. Complete the Medical Questionnaire
  • There are up to 26 questions. Answer truthfully.
  • Some answers may trigger a request for a medical report.
  • See Uploading a medical report if that happens.
6. Upload any supporting documents NDLS requests
7. Review the declarations and accept the payment terms
  • Pay the renewal fee (if applicable) and submit.

    Note: Some applicants (for example, older drivers) may see No fee.

Result

  • Your application is submitted and confirmed.
  • NDLS displays a confirmation screen and sends a confirmation email.

What to do next

  • Keep your reference number for any future query.
  • Watch for an NDLS email requesting extra documentation (if applicable).
